Put down your nets!

I was reading Matthew chapter 4 and ran across verses 18-20.  It’s a story I have heard all of my life, and when I say all my life, I mean ALL of my life.  This is the fishers of men story, but today it stands out a little clearer to me.  What stands out is a couple of things, number one, we see Jesus just walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee.  He’s just out for a stroll when he runs across Peter and Andrew.  Peter and Andrew were brothers who were fisherman.  These guys were just casually fishing one day when Jesus was out for his long walk on the beach, and it changed their lives forever.

“Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” Matthew 4:19 (NLT) This is what Jesus says to the brothers.  He’s basically saying, look guys, I know your fisherman, this is your job, this is how you make a living, but I want you to come follow me and we will fish for people.  Can you imagine how weird that must have been for these guys? I can imagine that it was mind blowing and sounded a little crazy.  This is what stands out to me as well.  These guys are just ordinary men, nothing special, just men with a job, but Jesus wanted them.  Follow me, He says, and this is where I get excited.  “And they left their nets at once and followed Him” Matthew 4:20 (NLT)

I thought about how the disciples had a decision to make. Do we keep fishing or do we put down our nets and follow Him? Had the disciples not followed Jesus where would we be as a people today? We see the disciples answer the call to “Come and Die.” In that moment they died to themselves, their wants, their needs and they followed Jesus.  Over time we see the disciples doing great things with Jesus.  When Jesus left the earth after his death, burial and Resurrection we see the disciples start the very first church in the book of Acts.  At the end of their lives they were all essentially killed because they loved, believed and followed Jesus.  They were world changers.  Just unschooled, ordinary men changed the world because of their obedience and their faith.

After reading this story again, I thought to myself what if we put down our nets? What are you holding on to that you need to put down to passionately follow Jesus? Are you holding on to something that you just need to lay at his feet? Is it your career, status, pride a certain sin? Whatever is in your life that is keeping you from following Jesus with complete faith and obedience, just drop it.  The disciples dropped their nets and went all in.  Whatever you are holding on to, just drop it, put down your nets! Whatever your net is, put it down, follow Jesus and change the world for the ones around you and leave a legacy for the ones coming up after you.  What you do today matters tomorrow, it matters next year, it matter in eternity.  All out obedience in a Jesus that loves us and cares for us.  The disciples trusted Him and changed the world.  Will you trust him today? You can be a world changer, a planet shaker and a difference maker! Just put down your net.

In Christ,

Steven
