Life, Groundhog Day and Married With Children

What is life? The definition of life can be defined like this “the existence of an individual human being or animal”. The existence – are we as humans just supposed to exist just like animals? Is that our only purpose for being here? Unfortunately many people are just existing in this world. Their lives look a lot like Bill Murray’s life in the movie Groundhog Day. Every day it’s the same old thing over and over and over. There is nothing different. For one person it may be get up, go to work, come home , eat supper, go to bed, get up and do it all over again day after day. For another it may be, get up, go to work, go to the bar, come home, go to bed, do it all over again the next day. For some it may be different, get up, get the kids to school, run errands, cook supper, play with the kids, go to bed, do it all over again the next day. We all tend to get in a routine of life and there is nothing necessarily wrong with routine but is that all we are here for? Just to settle in to our routine and then die, have people cry at our funeral and then one day hope to stand before Jesus and live with him forever? Most of you reading this know the answer to the question. We are not put on this earth to simply exist. There is something more to life than just going through our routines day after day. But to those who don’t know, what on earth are we here for?

1. Give God Glory
2. Build Each Other Up
3. Evangelize the world

These are the three things that I believe we are here to do while we exist. The first thing is give God glory. We are created in the image of God and we were created to worship Him. Genesis 1:27 says “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” So we are created in His image, now what? Give Him Glory!! And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him Colossians 3:17. Whatever you do!! Everything you do! Do it for the glory of God! Whether you work in a factory, work in a church, play a sport for your school or just play video games at your house, do it all for Gods glory. Everything we do in life should point to Jesus. We should be modern day John the Baptists. He came and pointed people to Jesus – we should do the same thing with the way we live our lives. The way we talk, the things we do and the places we go should all give God the gory and point people Jesus. Check out this verse – For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life – 2 Corinthians 2:15-16. The things we say and do are either leading people to a life apart from Christ, or we are either a huge billboard that points directly to Jesus. We are created to GIVE GOD GLORY!!! You can start today!!

The second thing I believe we are here to do is build each other up. Proverbs 27:17 says Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. The man in this verse can be a man, woman, boy or girl. We are all here to help each other out, to encourage one another and as the writer of Hebrews puts it, to spur one another on. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds Hebrews 10:24 (NIV). We are here to help each other out in our walk with Christ, to lift one another up, to encourage, sharpen and spur each other to a life spent giving God glory and evangelizing the world. Find someone today that will encourage you in your walk with Christ, someone that will call out your sin and truly hold you accountable, someone that you love and trust. Don’t just let that person build you up, build that person up as well. Encourage each other.

The third thing I believe we are here to do is to evangelize the world, or simply tell people about Jesus, or as Jesus puts it, make disciples. 18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28: 18-20. Go into the world and tell people about Jesus. I find it interesting that as you disciple people, essentially you are teaching them how to love God so you have to start first by telling the good news, the Gospel, what Jesus did on the cross and how HE has saved you and delivered you from a life of sin and spiritual death. That is the beginning of evangelizing the world. As you share the Gospel and that person accepts Christ, then guess what you do: You build that person up, you encourage them, sharpen them! I bet you can’t guess the third part of this: Teach them to give God glory in all they do!! Three in one – kind of like the trinity – but that is a topic for another time 😉

1. Give God Glory
2. Build Each Other Up
3. Evangelize the World

You can’t have one without the other. It’s kind of like love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage this I tell you brother, you can’t have one without the other. Ok, for those that don’t know I just went back to the theme song for Married With Children. Anyway, to bring it back, these all go hand in hand as part of our existence here on earth. As a Christian we start at the top and go down, but we also start at the bottom and go up when it comes to teaching others. Really cool how that works out.

Here is your challenge today: No matter what your circumstance or routine is Give God Glory
Secondly, find someone that you can encourage. Give them a call, shoot them a text or email. See if you can get together over coffee and just spur one another along.
Lastly, tell someone about Jesus today. Make disciples.

He is worth it. Don’t just exist. Make your existence matter. You were put here for a reason.

In Christ,

Steven
