Death to Life: Really?

Posted: January 29, 2015 in Uncategorized

Last night in our student ministry we spent the third week in the book of Ephesians. We looked at Ephesians 2:1-10. Here is what that says:

By Grace Through Faith
2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body[a] and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.[b] 4 But[c] God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

I want you to notice the words in bold. First off, let me make clear that this passage of scripture is talking about us moving from a dead spiritual life to an alive, abundant life in Christ. When we become a Christian we pass over from death to life spiritually.

Now lets move on with the bold words. You see these words in bold are past tense words. Were, once, was are all words that describe our past – IF we are in Christ. We now have an abundant life in Him and not a dead life in our sin. Here is where I have a problem. Many of us claim to be Christians, we confess Jesus with our lips but our heart is far from Him. Many of us have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives, but here is the deal. A lot of people, as Christians, are still living as though they are dead. They are the walking dead, there is no life, there is no joy, there is no obedience, there is no confession and repentance of sin, only death and it is infecting everyone around us. I believe that we worry about what people think way to much and sadly we are to afraid to stand up for what we believe in so we just blend in with the rest of the world. That is death! We are called to be bold, be strong and courageous, go out into the world and make disciples! We can’t do that with our comfortable Christianity! Making disiples would involve us opening our mouths and even acting like Jesus has transformed us from the inside out. We sit back and watch the world fall apart around us while we sit quietly in our cushioned seats at church instead of getting our hands dirty as the church.

It is time for an Awakening!! If you say you love Jesus, then act like you love Jesus. If you say you love Jesus but you don’t act like you love Jesus, then SHUT UP! Your making the rest of the ones that love and act like they love Jesus look bad. I’m tired of comfortable Christianity, I hope you are too! If Jesus has saved your life then walk in the newness of life, live like He’s called you to live, stop blending in, stop being comfortable, stop ignoring the fire raging inside of you for the sake of looking cool. Get up off your spiritual butt and get to work, do something for the sake of God’s Kingdom. Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

This is a simple call to all Christians to live as you are called. Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk.

I love all of you.

In Christ,

Steven
