Get up off me!!

I used to play a lot of basketball and one thing I always seemed to hear was “get up off me!” Someone would be guarding another to close and the other guy would get upset.  The only way to stop someone from guarding you to close is to be more agressive and push that guy out of your way.  Resist that pressure and eventually the guy will back off.  This reminds me of our life in Christ.  James 4:7 says submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  I’ve read this many times in scripture and I have known this but it seems that resisting the devil is one of the hardes things to do in this life.

I started thinking last night as I was reading this that if a man walked up to me and started punching me in the head, I would do everything I could do to get him to stop.  I wouldn’t just take it, I would fight back.  Much like playing basketball, when someone pushed me, I pushed back.  I didn’t take it, and I wouldn’t take it. These are two instances where someone is getting to up close and personal with you.  Maybe there is no agenda, the guy punching you might be mad at you about something that he will eventually get over.  The basketball player is just playing aggressive. Satan wants to get up close and personal with you but he wants to take something from you, he wants to take something from me.  He wants to take our joy, our freedom, our life in Christ.  He wants to steal, kill and destroy us.  He wants to take our lives, and he doesn’t want us to ever focus on Jesus.

So why wouldn’t I just resist the devil and watch him flee? At the very name of Jesus he has to flee, he has to run far, far away.  We can say “Get up off me in the name of Jesus!!” and he has to vanish.  I’ve learned in my life that I have been dancing with death way to often.  I’ve been dancing with the devil and in the process I’m losing.  I’m losing that joy, I’m losing that trust, that hope that I have in Jesus.  I was losing my life.  When we resist the devil, when we say get up off me in Jesus name, he leaves.  There is no fighting back, there is no resisting from the devil himself, he is a coward and with one sentence, he leaves.  There is power in the name of Jesus, He has already fought for us, He’s won the battle, and he doesn’t want to see any of his children fall under the enemies rule.  Thats why at the name of Jesus the devil runs, and we are standing there with Jesus, now turning toward him and away from whatever the devil wanted us to do.

Don’t let the enemy steal your joy, don’t let him steal your marriage, your finances, your faith or your life that is wrapped up in Christ.  It’s as easy as shouting, “Get up off me, in the name of Jesus!”

Thanks for the great words of wisdom. It’s still Jesus and will always be Jesus. He already won the battle.
