I Hate It!!

I’ve been taking a journey through Psalm 119.  I have seen a theme that stands out over and over throughout this chapter.  The love of the word, scripture, commandments.  Seems like every other sentence says something about loving God’s word, but it’s not just a love like you love your favorite puppy or aunt.  It’s a deep unwaivering, unshakable love for God’s word and what it teaches.

Then I got to verse 104.  “Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.” Do you see that one word that is the total opposite of love? Hate! This isn’t a hate from a sinful heart, but rather this hate comes from a love of God and who He is and from His word.  When we turn from Jesus we sin.  For example, if we do what we want to do; we get drunk, we look at porn, we gamble, we cheat on our spouse, we tell dirty jokes, we lie on our taxes, we lie to our boss, etc… On and on and on and on it goes.  We know many different ways to sin, and when we partake in sin, we are ultimately turning away from God and saying “I choose to follow this false way of living.” Anything apart from Jesus is sin, and the author of this verse says they “hate” every way that is false.  In our culture we should say it like this.  “I HATE sin!!”

We have to be careful here.  We can hate sin yet still be living right in the middle of it.  This hate isn’t just a Christian way of saying we don’t like sin. This hate is a gut wrenching hate for sin because we love Jesus way to much.  When we hate sin we will do everything necessary to flee from sin and stay away from it.  We would even beg and plead with people close to us to turn from their sin, because we know it’s end is death and destruction.

So to say we hate sin, we have to truly hate it.  We have to kill sin before it kills us.  Take a look at your lives today. Do you really hate sin enough to turn to Jesus and love Him and His word? Or do you just dislike sin, but choose to do nothing about it.  You’re on one side of the fence or the other.  There is no in between.  Out of love for Jesus and God’s word, I choose to hate sin.  He’s to good to continue living a mediocre Christian life.  I’m tired of Him spewing me out of His mouth. (Revelation 3:15-16)
