My thoughts on Phil Robertson, Duck Dynasty and A&E (As if we needed anymore)

Sometimes things happen in the media and there is an imediate backlash, or outcry from two different groups of people.  1. The people that are opposed to what has been said or what has happened 2. The people that approve and stand behind what was said, or what has happened.  The media takes things and runs with them in order to create emotion, ratings and generate income.  We sit around and listen to media and form our opinions based on what they say.  I say look in scripture and see what it says about things that happen in our daily lives.  One thing we often do is jump to conclusions, even as Christians we form opinions and draw conclusions based on others instead of the Living, Breathing Word of God.

First off – The comments: People says he was harsh, and used bad language, maybe even bad grammer, but the most talked about thing was…..he was offensive.  Yes!! I agree!!! Maybe he was offensive but when you look at the Gospel itself – it too is offensive.  “some guy was brutally beaten and murdered on a cross for me, because I’m a sinner?” “Yes, exactly!!” “Your offending me get out of my face!!” See what I mean? That is probably a conversation you have had if you are being a disciple maker that we are all called to be.  Do you think Jesus sugar coated anything? In my southern paraphrase He says you will eat my body and drink my blood!! What? That is offensive.  Who says that? Jesus – thats who! So to say that Phil Robertson said anything out of the way or offensive is absurd.  We are to worried about appeasing the “Christian audiance” that we forget that we are at war.  We have to speak with athourity, and if that means speaking in a way that offends others, then so be it so long as we speak out of love.

Which brings me to my next point. Phil Robertson did not say he hated homosexuals, that they are horrible people, he simply said it’s not his cup of tea and that it is indeed sin.  He didn’t just single out homosexuality, he went through a whole list that 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 deals with. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. That list doesn’t just say homosexuals, it includes many different sin.  Also, on top of it all, he said he loves them, he isn’t hateful toward them in any way.  So he was offensive, yet in a loving, country boy way.

A&E – They never claim to be a Christian station so lets cut them some slack.  They have beliefs and an agenda as well.  So let them push their agenda and see what happens.  We can’t change anything, we can only pray for the owners, directors, producers, etc… that they may one day meet Jesus and proclaim him as their Savior on this side of the casket.  It’s all business with A&E to appease and comfort certain groups.  But Christians, don’t let this stop you from speaking out.  It didn’t stop Phil, it shouldn’t stop us. It’s time we unite and get serious about the Gospel, and serious about following Jesus.  We don’t need a watered down Christianity.  It has never been watered down, it has always been powerful, offensive and loving.  Stand and proclaim the Gospel, follow Jesus and teach others to do the same.
