Our Jealous God

Posted: October 11, 2013 in Uncategorized

I was reading Hosea chapter 2 yesterday and I was completely wrecked at just how much God loves us.  He loves us so much that He will not compete with anything or anyone.  He wants to be number one in our lives, and as a matter of fact, He wants to be the only One!!! There are so many things that battle for our hearts and for our attention, and it is up to us to determine who or what sits on the throne of our hearts.  Look at Hosea chapter 2.  He is unloading on the woman in this chapter…. take just a minute or two to read it. Wow, God is going off!! Then, verse 8

And she did not know
that it was I who gave her
the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and who lavished on her silver and gold,
    which they used for Baal.

This lady received perfect gifts from God and instead of giving Him all the glory she worshiped Baal. How often has that happened in our lives? We receive perfect gifts from our Father and fail to give him all the glory and honor.  God in Hosea chapter 2 is proving to be jealous, He even says she has forgotten Him.  It’s obvious that God is upset and that He wants this woman’s heart, but she isn’t having any of it.  But, read on…

14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,     and bring her into the wilderness,     and speak tenderly to her. 15 And there I will give her her vineyards     and make the Valley of Achor[e] a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth,     as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.

16 “And in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more.

This lady has turned from God, but he will draw her back to Himself and speak tenderly to her, restore her and she will not even remember the name of Baal anymore.  Wait, there is more, she will call God her husband!! What an amazing picture of a loving jealous God.  Jealous of her, He is furious. Loving her, He draws her back to Himself and calls her His Bride!

As Christians we are the bride of Christ, but like this woman, we can’t keep stepping out on God and turning to other things.  Other things will leave us empty and will ultimately fail us.  No matter how hard we try things always crash around us when we don’t have God on the throne of our hearts.  We have to rid our lives of these things that do not honor Him and place Him in His rightful place, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords of our hearts.

He is jealous, He will not tolerate other gods in our lives, He is THE God and the ONLY God.  He will ferociously call us back to Himself and in that moment speak tenderly to us and restore us to Him.

It’s my prayer tonight that we would recognize the gods in our lives and get rid of them and turn back to God before He turns us back Himself.  What is it in your life? Money, wealth, achievement, goals, sex, family, kids? All of these things are good if used the way God intended, but when we put them before Him they do something to us.  They cause us to turn our backs on Him, we forget about Him and we worship these things in stead of the One true God.  Look into your heart tonight, is there anything there that you have place before Him? Go ahead and get rid of them and lean on God, put your faith in Him and trust Him.
